Measures (Height) 38cm/15"
An antique Khmer style pair of Temple Guardians or Lion figures, in the pre-Angkor period, 10th century style of Banteay Srei.
The Khmer Empire, renowned for its architectural marvels such as Angkor Wat, flourished from the 9th to the 15th centuries in what is now Cambodia. Temples built during this period are adorned with intricate sculptures and reliefs, including the iconic Khmer Temple Lions. These lion statues were not merely ornamental but held profound symbolic and spiritual significance.
The guardians of the gate, are placed around the outside of a temple to serve both as greeters and defenders, they were specifically intended to protect the principle entrances of temples.
Symbolizing power and protection, these guardian lions ward off evil spirits and protect the sanctity of the spaces they watch over.
Each statue is cast in the round to show a strong body with an ornate coiffure with full lips and almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils beneath gently curving brows.
Khmer Temple Lions are not just symbols of spirituality but also exquisite examples of Khmer artistry. Intricately carved with meticulous attention to detail, each statue showcases the skilled craftsmanship of Khmer artisans. Each lion features a stylized manes, muscular forms, and expressive face, reflecting the cultural and artistic nuances of the time.
The casting of these pieces are beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly.
The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful. This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add serenity to your home, office or sacred space.
