Male Statue - Antique Stone 8th Century Phnom Da Style Male Deity Torso (probably Vishnu) - 54cm / 22"
Measures - (Height) 54cm/22"
An imposing pre-Angkor early 8th century style Khmer sandstone torso (possibly Vishnu) in Phnom Da style.
The Phnom Da period, also known as the Funan period, is a lesser-known but pivotal epoch in the history of the Khmer civilization. Nestled in the heart of Southeast Asia, the Khmer Empire flourished during various periods, each marked by its unique cultural, architectural, and political achievements.
The Phnom Da period, situated between the Chenla and Angkor eras, serves as a bridge between these more renowned epochs.
The architecture of the Phnom Da period is less grandiose and monumental compared to the Angkor period that followed. Nevertheless, it showcased the early Khmer's proficiency. Stone religious sculptures were skilfully carved and sometimes, as here, adorned with intricate carvings.
Here this male torso is clothed in monastic dress composed of the traditional long piece of cloth draped around the hips. Tied with a simple sash at the waist .
The clothing sensuously hugs the body revealing the anatomy beneath, a drapery style inspired by early seventh century Dvaravati styles that can be traced back to styles in Gupta period India.
The sculpture embodies authority with its heavy silhouette. The carving is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the dhoti. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The features suggest the prana, or inner breath, that signifies superhuman power. The figure is clad in traditional Khmer Dhoti.
Typical of the Phnom Da period thick ankle supports can be seen to the rear of the sculpture. These were required to help carry the weight of the sculpture.
The sculpture is mounted and presented in the round. It is clear that the artist anticipated this sculpture being enjoyed from all sides. The torso is mounted on a wood base and metal rods (later).
