An antique 6th century Phnom Da style sculpture of Krishna (possibly).

Krishna is one of the most popular avatars of Vishnu. Here, he is depicted in Phnom Da style, akin to Vishnu but with his own unique characteristics.

The architecture of the Phnom Da period is less grandiose and monumental compared to the Angkor period that followed. Nevertheless, it showcased the early Khmer's proficiency. Stone religious sculptures were skilfully carved.

This rare and unusual Phnom Da style Lord Krishna embodies authority with his iconic downcast gaze and large unexpressive face. The general silhouette is heavier. The carving is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The features suggest the prana, or inner breath, that signifies superhuman power.

The simple carving of the patterned diadem provide a delightful contrast with the serene presentation of the face. The inner rims of the ears simply carved. The lobes hanging low. The face is defined by slightly arched eyebrows, full rimmed lips, moustache, open rimmed eyes and aquiline nose.

The deity wears a simple, cylindrical mitre on his head.

Lord Krishna is known for his enchanting personality, playful charm, and profound wisdom. Krishna embodies a divine presence that transcends time and place. One of the most distinct aspects of Krishna’s appearance is his adornment with a peacock feather, typically worn in his crown. This symbol is more than just decorative; it holds deep significance in Hindu culture, representing beauty, spirituality, and Krishna’s connection to nature.

Here, a full peacock bird is depicted on his high miter. Krishna's association with the Peacock and the feathers of the bird help us identify this unique and unusual sculpture as Krishna.

The feathers of the Peacock, with its iridescent hues of blue, green, and gold, symbolizes beauty and elegance, qualities often associated with Krishna himself. As a deity, Krishna is known not only for his divine wisdom but also for his irresistible charm and physical beauty, which captivated the gopis (cowherd maidens) and drew people toward him.

The “eye” pattern in the feather is seen as a symbol of Krishna’s watchful, playful nature. Krishna’s life is often depicted as a dance of divine play (lila), a reminder that the universe is a creation of joy and mystery. Just as a peacock dances in the rain with abandon, Krishna’s lila signifies the joyful participation in life’s dance, inviting devotees to connect with the divine through love and playfulness.

In Hindu mythology, peacocks are considered sacred birds that symbolize purity and compassion. Their association with Krishna reminds devotees of the importance of these qualities on the spiritual path. The peacock feather, resting upon Krishna’s head, serves as a gentle reminder of the spiritual virtues he embodies and bestows on his devotees.

The face of Krishna offers both beauty and sensuality, displaying the major characteristics of pre-Angkor period Khmer masculine beauty.

The sculpture is carved in the round telling us that Krishna was meant to be enjoyed from all angles.

The distinctive patina and details of this piece are particularly appealing.

The statue has been mounted on wood plinth (later).
