Antique Burmese Style Bronze Standing Chinthe Guardian Temple Lions - 24cm/10" (Pair)
Measures (Height) - 24cm/10"
A lovely pair of antique Burmese style bronze Chinthe or Guardian lions.
In the enchanting landscape of Myanmar, where pagodas and temples punctuate the horizon, the mythical Chinthe stands as a sentinel, guarding sacred spaces with its majestic presence. This revered creature, depicted here as a mythical lion, with unique embellishments, holds a significant place in Burmese mythology and architectural heritage.
The Chinthe is a leogryph (lion-like creature) that is often seen at the entrances of pagodas and temples in Myanmar (Burma). It is related to the Singha in Thailand and the Simha in Sri Lanka as well as to other similar lion statues in other parts of Asia.
The chinthe and the simha are featured prominently on the Burmese kyat and the Sri Lankan rupee respectively.
Its origins are deeply rooted in Burmese folklore and Buddhism. Legend has it that the Chinthe is a guardian spirit, symbolizing strength, courage, and protection. Its mythical presence is believed to ward off malevolent forces, ensuring the sanctity of temples and pagodas.
The chinthe will serve and protect the pagoda. Like the komainu of Japan, shisa of Okinawa and snow lion of Tibet, the chinthe is a variation of the Foo Dog Guardian Lions found in China.
In the realm of Burmese mythology and architectural splendor, the Chinthe stands as a testament to the enduring connection between culture, spirituality, and artistic expression. As these mythical guardians grace the entrances of temples, they invite us to appreciate the rich tapestry of Myanmar's heritage and the timeless significance of the Chinthe in shaping the nation's cultural identity.
In the heart of Myanmar, where the Chinthe roars in stone, a story unfolds—a story of courage, protection, and the eternal spirit of guardianship.
