An Indonesian (Java) enthroned Lokeshvara in 13th century Majapahit style.
Lokeshvara, also known as Avalokiteshvara or Guanyin, is one of the most revered and beloved figures in Buddhist iconography. As a Bodhisattva, Lokeshvara embodies the essence of compassion, representing the aspiration to alleviate suffering and attain enlightenment not only for oneself but also for all sentient beings.
Lokeshvara serves as a profound embodiment of the Bodhisattva ideal, which prioritizes compassion and altruism over personal liberation. His primary role is to hear and respond to the cries of suffering beings, using his wisdom and skillful means to alleviate their afflictions.
Lokeshvara is seated on a round lotus petal pedestal, which is itself presented on a decorated, square pedestal. He is dressed in a simple robe, with a sash tied around his waist and is wearing a number of pieces of ornate jewellery, including crown and earrings.
He holds a number of items in his hands such as mala beads, Ghanta or bell.
His left hand holds a lotus bud. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of the Bodhisattvas to see past our mundane universe of suffering.
An unusual in design aureole sits behind the head of Lokeshvara, with beaded edge, flaming rim and lotus bud finial. This circle of light symbolises his divinity.
Surrounding Lokeshvara are seated Buddha images in meditation pose.

The sculpture has a wonderful azurite and malachite patina.
