Antique Thai Style Dvaravati Standing Bronze Preaching Buddha Statue 55cm/22"
Measures (Height) 55cm/22"
An antique Thai Dvaravati style Buddha from Thailand. The figure is is stood samabhanga and is remarkable for its realistic yet delicate delineation of the limbs and the robe which seems to cling to the body.
The garment (sanghati) covers the left shoulder. The right hand is held out in the vitarka mudra of teaching. The lowered left hand grants boons in the varada mudra. A very naturalistic succession of wavy folds on the surface of his body revealing the soft contours of the body underneath.
His face is handsome with a slight smile and aquiline nose. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
The Buddha has been professionally loose mounted on a wood base.
