An antique Sukhothai style enthroned Enlightenment Buddha from Thailand.
The Sukhothai Empire, a paramount state that flourished from the 13th to the 15th century in what is now modern-day Thailand, stands as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage and remarkable historical significance. Known for its innovative governance, architectural marvels, religious devotion, and artistic achievements, the Sukhothai Empire remains a pivotal chapter in Southeast Asian history.
Buddhism played a pivotal role in the Sukhothai Empire's cultural and religious landscape. The empire embraced Theravada Buddhism, which not only influenced spiritual life but also art, culture, and societal values. Monasteries served as centers of learning, fostering intellectual exchange and contributing to the preservation of knowledge. This period saw the flourishing of literature and poetry, with inscriptions and texts providing insights into the ethos of the time.
The Sukhothai Empire is celebrated for its remarkable artistic achievements that still captivate observers today. Sculptures and statues from this era exemplify a sense of elegance and serenity, reflecting the spiritual essence of Buddhism. As with this Buddha, the art of the Sukhothai period holds a distinct place in the broader Southeast Asian artistic tradition, characterized by graceful forms, intricate detailing, and a focus on spiritual representation.
Typical of the Sukhothai period, the bodies profile is with broad shoulders and slender waist, covered by a Sanghati robe worn diagonally over the left shoulder, and is graced by a heavily pleated flap draped to the navel, marked with a fishtail shaped notch. The right shoulder is left bare.
The Buddha features an oval face, with almond shaped downcast eyes. Curved eyebrows meet above a prominent nose, and contoured lips with an exalted expression, appear smiling. The shell like curls of the hair form a heart shaped line around the face, surmounted by a hemispherical ushnisha, topped by a flamed ornamental finial, symbolizing his high level of spiritual development. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
The Buddha is seated on a large and highly decorated pedestal in the Bhumisparsa or 'Calling the Earth to Witness' mudra. With fingers slightly touching the ground this position represents the subduing of Mara (a demon) who bombarded Buddha with demons, monsters, violent storms and the three seductive daughters. Remaining steadfast the Buddha testified to his meritorious past by pointing to the earth and calling the Earth Goddess, Thorani.
Rising from the ground the Earth Goddess wrings the water from her long black hair. By this action she raises a torrential flood that drowns Mara and his army of demons. This gesture reflects this story symbolizing enlightenment, as well as steadfastness and Buddha's achievement of perfection or nirvana.
The Sukhothai Buddha is seated upon a highly detailed gilt gold and cinnabar coloured throne. The sculpture is formed of two separate but interlocking parts. The statue of Buddha and the throne that he is seated upon.
The Sukhothai Empire stands as a beacon of historical brilliance in Southeast Asia. Its innovative governance, architectural marvels, religious devotion, artistic achievements, and lasting influence collectively shape its legacy. By embracing its past, Thailand not only honors its rich heritage but also gains insights that resonate in the present.
This Sukhothai Buddha is a testament to the enduring power of culture and civilization, inviting us to marvel at the feats of the past and draw inspiration for the future.
