Antique Angkor Wat Style Large Stone Mounted Khmer Buddha Torso - 102cm / 41"
Measures (Height) 102cm/41"
An antique Khmer style large mounted stone Buddha toro in the 12th century Angkor Wat style.
Typical of the Angkor Wat style the sculpture possesses a grandeur. At the same time, the statue is not submitted to strict iconographic norms, the statue loses its stiffness and becomes more human.
The sculpture embodies authority with its heavy silhouette. The features suggest the prana, or inner breath, that signifies superhuman power.
The art of Angkor Wat is in many ways in opposition to that of the preceding Baphuon style. The style is a return to frontality and hieratism. Generally, the sculpture demonstrates a feeling of elegance and softness. The image radiates an aloofness, the quiet power of Buddha and the sensuality typical of the Angkor Wat period. It uses and develops the formulas of the Koh Ker style, the headdress with horizontal tresses and the conical mukuta. The fullness of the forms give the face a softness which accentuates the almost downcast eyes, and the fleshy and sensual lips. The face shows a strong sense of observation. The overall silhouette is elegant and a reminder of the Pre Angkorian Art.
The ornate carving of the diadem provides a delightful contrast with the smooth, polished stone, facial features. The inner rims of the ears display the characteristic tripart scalloped treatment. The lobes hang low, stretched from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. The face is defined by slightly arched eyebrows, full rimmed lips, wide open rimmed eyes and an aquiline nose. A conical three tier chignon-cover surmounts the head and is surrounded by a diadem, typical of the Angkor Wat period.
Buddha is clothed in a short, pleated sampot belted at the waist. The lower edge of the central pleat opens into an oblique ornate fishtail in front, typical of the Angkor Wat style. The style is distinctly archaistic, harking back to tenth- and eleventh century drapery conventions and the continuous ridged eyebrows.
The statue is mounted on a wood base.
