Shiva Ganesha Statue - Antique Koh Ker Style Khmer Stone Shiva & Ganesha Statue - 79cm/32"
Measures (Height) 79cm/32"
An elegant and extremely rare dual head of Shiva and Ganesha in the Cambodian, pre Angkor, 10th century Koh Ker style. The power emanating from this compelling image of both Shiva and Ganesha characterises the Koh Ker style.
As is typical with this style the Shiva has a soft face with minimal adornments. Shiva is identified by his moustache, beard and the third eye carved on his forehead. The sculpture is in the Koh Ker style and may originally have been dedicated to the god Vishnu, with the image being altered at a later date. The inner rims of the ears display the characteristic tripart scalloped treatment. The face appears typically Khmer, with a serene expression, incised almond-shaped eyes, connected arched eyebrows above a well-shaped broad nose, wide plump mouth and elongated, bejewelled, earlobes.
The classic Koh Ker style carving of the diadem provides a delightful contrast with the smooth facial features. A conical four tier chignon-cover surmounts the head, typical of the Koh Ker period.
Shiva is adorned with carved jewellery and would have been honoured with real jewellery during feast days and ceremonies. The Shiva embodies authority with its iconic downcast gaze and large unexpressive face. The general silhouette is heavier. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The features suggest the prana, or inner breath, that signifies superhuman power. As with images from this period, the ornamentation reflects a perfect mastery of sculpting and fluidity. Facial features of the statue reflect the delicate characteristics of the Koh Ker style.
The deity is masterfully modelled in realistic human form. The power of Shiva is limitless, transcendent and unchanging as he removes all evil from the world. For the devotee Shiva offers protection, guidance and a sense of belonging. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation and arts.
The reverse of the sculpture is characterised by an image of Ganesha, it too in the Koh Ker style, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati. His elephant features are sensitively and naturalistically rendered and blend seamlessly into the anthropomorphic figure to the rear.
Both Shiva and Ganesha are in sampots can kpin, with pleats in the Koh Ker style, arranged with a large folded over edge.
The sculpture is mounted on wood (later).
