  • Antique Khmer Style SE Asia Wood Reclining Nirvana Buddha Statue - 40cm/16"

    Measures (Length) 40cm/16"

An antique Khmer style wood reclining Buddha. With flowing robes the Buddha is depicted in the nirvana or enlightenment pose, Buddha's head resting on a pillow.

In the tapestry of Buddhist philosophy, one concept stands out as the ultimate goal of human existence – Nirvana. Rooted in the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, Nirvana represents the culmination of a spiritual journey towards liberation from suffering and the cycle of birth and death.

The journey to Nirvana is guided by the Noble Eightfold Path, a set of ethical and mental guidelines prescribed by the Buddha. The Eightfold Path includes right understanding, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. By cultivating these qualities, individuals gradually purify their minds and develop the wisdom and compassion necessary to attain Nirvana.

It's important to note that the path to Nirvana is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Different schools of Buddhism may emphasize various practices and approaches, but the central theme remains the transformation of the mind and the eradication of craving and ignorance.

The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizes his high level of spiritual development. The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow.

His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.

The Buddha is laying down on his side in calm repose. This pose captures him in his final moments before his death. The pose is also referred to as the sleeping Buddha and symbolises the Buddha's achievement of nirvana or enlightenment. The Buddha knew the exact moment of his death and at this time lay down to sleep and simply passed away peacefully with his enlightened soul eternally escaping the cycle of samasara.

The reclining pose demonstrates Buddhas attainment of nirvana. It is also the Thai Buddhist symbol for those born on a Tuesday.

In the rich tapestry of Buddhist teachings, Nirvana stands as the ultimate goal, representing a state of profound peace, freedom from suffering, and transcendence of the cycle of birth and death. The path to Nirvana is a transformative journey guided by ethical principles, mindfulness, and the cultivation of wisdom.

As practitioners walk this path, they inch closer to the extinguishing of the fires that fuel suffering, ultimately realizing the timeless and unconditioned state of Nirvana.

One of the most recognisable of the Asian deities this representation of the spiritual teacher Buddha is sure to enlighten your home with endlessly timeless style.

Let Us Help You Find The Piece You Desire

I just opened the Buddha statue I purchased from you. I couldn’t be happier! It’s really beautiful, particularly the face. The shipping was faster than pieces I’ve bought on Etsy coming from the US, so thank you!! Do you have any idea how old this statue is? I’m looking forward to receiving the Avalokitesvara statue I recently ordered.

Laura, New York City, NY, USA

The Buddha head arrived safely today. The look of serenity they all possess is very appealing. This sandstone head strikes me as being particularly beautiful. The way the sculptor has created that look of complete contentment amazes me. Just the hint of a smile - definitely more Mona Lisa than Laughing Cavalier! A wonderful piece and I love it!

Stuart, Manchester, UK

Oh my word...I have no words! Speechless. Thank you.
