Buddha Statue - Antique Japanese Style Seated Bronze Protection Buddha Statue - 34cm/14"
Measures (Height) 34cm/14"
An antique Japanese style Buddha seated in the lotus or Padmasana position.
Simple sanghati or robes cascade from both shoulders. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the under-cloth or skirt is completely covered.
The Buddha is seated upon a double lotus leaf pedestal. The lotus flower represents the attaining of enlightenment and the ultimate fulfilment that follows. This symbol is heavily used in Eastern religions, which is why it can appear as both a held item or a seat. Some say that as the lotus flower grows in dirty water but becomes something beautiful, it demonstrates how we must forget our attachments to the material world around us and focus on our inner spirituality in order to seek happiness.
The Buddha's hand faces outwards in the abhaya mudra. The Abhaya mudra "gesture of fearlessness" is a mudra (gesture) that offers protection, reassurance and safety. Dispelling fear and according divine protection and bliss in many Indian religions. His hands are held upright, with the palms facing outwards. This is one of the earliest mudras found depicted on a number of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain images.
He has a large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head, symbolizing his high level of spiritual development. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
Behind the Buddha sits a halo or aureole, with flaming rim and finial. This circle of light symbolises his divinity.

While Brahma is not a central figure in Thai Buddhism, his presence as Phra Phrom signifies the deep-rooted connections between the two religions and the enduring legacy of Hinduism in Southeast Asia.
