Antique Pre-Angkor Style Koh Ker Stone Stele Durga Statue - 51cm/20"
Measures (Height) 51cm/20"
An antique Pre-Angkor style Koh Ker Durga standing in Samapada.
Durga is the Goddess famous for killing the buffalo-demon, Mahishasura. Here Durga is four armed and holds a disk (chakra) in her upper right hand, a conch in her upper left hand and a staff in her lower right, attributes traditionally held by Vishnu with whom she is associated in Khmer beliefs.
The deity is clothed in a long sampot that has been carefully rendered to show the creases in the material formed as it is gathered up to tie at the waist, in typical Koh Ker style. Prominent beauty lines embrace the lower portions of her breast. The Durga image here is shown wearing a miter, a major feature linking her to the God Vishnu.
The rear of the Stele is decorated with the Trishula, Axe and Vase of Plenty.
The stele does not appear to be dated.
The stele is free standing.
