Antique Khmer Style Koh Ker Durga Mahishasuramardini Statue- 54cm/22"
Measures - (Height) 54cm/22"
An antique 10th century Koh Ker style Durga Mahishasuramardini.
This Durga Mahishasuramardini image is unusual for Khmer Durga images and reflects the vigorous spirit of the Koh Ker period. Earlier Khmer Durga images have only four arms and are carved in the round, while the present image has eight arms.
Durga is represented in the final act of vanquishing the buffalo-demon. She stands surrounded by her eight hand-held attributes that proclaim her prowess in battle.
The uppermost right hand holds a disk (chakra). The attribute in the second right hand is a dagger, and the attribute in the third right hand is a blue lotus held by the stem. The lower right hand holds the staff of a trident that has broken away. Her upper left hand holds a conch. The next two arms are cut off at the wrist.
The goddess is clothed in a sampot with a deep pleated fold at the waist and slight flare at the bottom in typical Koh Ker style. She wears a tiered octagonal chignon-cover surrounded by a diadem on her head, otherwise she is unadorned.
The disk and conch shell among her attributes reflect Durga's close association with Vishnu rather than Shiva in the Khmer world.
The chignon-cover is also typical of Koh Ker Vishnu figures rather than Koh Ker Shiva images. A torana relief at Banteay Srei, which was consecrated in 967, follows the Koh Ker iconography seen here.' Durga is depicted with eight arms in the process of slaying the buffalo-demon. Even the way her trusty lion-vehicle is portrayed, frontally and surrounded by his curly ruff, appears in the Banteay Srei relief.
The distinctive patina and details of this piece are particularly appealing.
The statue has been mounted on wood plinth (later). The sculpture (excluding the stand) measures 49cm/19".
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add a unique touch to any room of your home or workplace.
One of the most recognizable of the Asian deities this representation of the consort of Vishnu is sure to enlighten your home with endlessly timeless style.
